The Clare Collaborative: AFLAC
Empowering our healthcare communities by connecting caregivers and members with essential wellness resources. We bridge the gap to nutritional support, stress-relief initiatives, and fitness programs—all designed to promote and sustain optimal health.
Supplemental Cash Protection for Caregivers
Caregivers are eligible to enroll in our Corporate AFLAC Account. Unlike standard health insurance that pays doctors, Aflac is supplemental insurance—it pays cash benefits directly to you. Use these funds however you need to cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and copays, or everyday expenses like rent and groceries.
Key Things to Know (MA Residents)
Unless you specifically “assign” benefits to a hospital, the check comes directly to your mailbox or bank account.
Aflac typically uses a 6–12 month “look-back” period. If you are already being treated for a condition, it may not be covered immediately.
Certain plans (especially Cancer protection) may have a 30-day waiting period after signing up before you can file a claim.
Part 1: Accident Advantage Plan
Life happens everywhere—on the job, at home, or even on the soccer field. The Accident Advantage plan kicks in if you or a covered family member are injured in a covered accident. It provides cash to help you handle the unexpected costs of recovery.
| Coverage Area | What the Plan Pays You |
|---|---|
| Initial Treatment | A lump sum ($100–$200+) for your very first visit to an ER or Urgent Care following an accident. |
| Specific Injuries | Set cash amounts for serious injuries, including fractures, dislocations, lacerations, or burns. |
| Follow-up Care | Ongoing cash support for physical therapy sessions and follow-up doctor visits to ensure you recover fully. |
| Hospitalization | Includes an Initial Hospitalization benefit (~$1,000) plus a daily “Confinement” check for every day you stay in the hospital. |
| Wellness Benefit | An annual payout of approx. $60 just for staying healthy and getting a routine checkup or screening. |
Pro Tip: The Wellness Benefit effectively lowers your annual cost. By simply getting your annual physical, you earn back nearly 10 weeks of individual coverage.
Part 2: Hospital Indemnity (Choice/Advantage)
Standard health insurance is designed to pay doctors and hospitals. Hospital Indemnity is designed to pay you. This plan provides a specific cash payout based on your admission and length of stay, helping you cover the gap while you are away from work.
| Service Detail | Cash Benefit to You |
|---|---|
| Hospital Admission | A high-value lump sum (often $500–$1,000+) paid the first time you are admitted as an inpatient per year. |
| Daily Confinement | A daily cash amount (e.g., $150/day) for every single day you remain in the hospital. |
| Intensive Care (ICU) | Higher daily payouts if your recovery requires a stay in the ICU. |
| Freedom of Choice | No Network restrictions. Use any hospital you choose; Aflac only needs your discharge papers to issue payment. |
Why this matters: A hospital stay often comes with unexpected costs like parking, meals for family, or lost wages. This plan ensures you have cash on hand to handle those burdens.
Part 3: Cancer Protection Assurance
Cancer treatment is notoriously expensive due to “indirect” costs like specialized drugs, travel, and loss of income. This plan targets those specific gaps, providing cash support through every stage of the journey.
| Milestone | Cash Benefit to You |
|---|---|
| Initial Diagnosis | A large lump sum ($1,000 to $4,000+) paid upon the very first diagnosis of internal cancer. |
| Treatment & Surgery | Monthly or weekly cash for Chemo, Radiation, and Immunotherapy, plus surgical benefits based on complexity. |
| Travel & Lodging | Cash for mileage, airfare, and hotel stays if you must seek specialized treatment far from home. |
| Annual Screening | Pays you $75–$100 every year for getting routine screenings like mammograms, PAP smears, or PSA tests. |
Early Detection Pays: By using the Annual Screening benefit, you are essentially rewarded for taking care of your health, which helps offset the weekly cost of the policy.
Part 4: Critical Illness (Lump Sum Plan)
In Massachusetts, this plan is designed to provide an immediate financial shield against the “Big Three”: Heart Attack, Stroke, and Cancer. Instead of many small checks, this plan focuses on one massive payment to provide stability during a major health crisis.
| Feature | How It Protects You |
|---|---|
| The Lump Sum Payout | Choose a “Face Amount” (e.g., $10k, $20k, or $30k). If you suffer a covered event, Aflac sends you a single check for the full amount in one shot. |
| Covered Conditions | Full payouts for Heart Attack, Stroke, Major Organ Transplant, End-Stage Renal Failure, and Sudden Cardiac Arrest. |
| Partial Payouts (25%) | Procedures like Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery or Non-Invasive Cancer typically pay out 25% of your chosen face amount. |
| Subsequent Events | Includes Recurrence Payouts. If you have a heart attack and then a stroke later, you can often receive the full benefit again (usually after a 6–12 month separation period). |
| Health Screening | Earn $50–$100 every year just for getting a routine blood test, stress test, or other major screening. |
The Core Goal: This plan is built for immediate financial shock absorption. While other plans pay for treatment steps, this provides a large cash reserve the moment you are diagnosed with a major condition.
